06.10.10 – Vacations

Are vacations a regular part of your life?

I’m just wondering.

See, I grew up showing horses. Arabian horses, in a national circuit. This meant that from April to October every year, my mom and I (along with horse, trainer, and the rest of the team) were on the road almost every weekend, traveling all over, up and down. This meant I didn’t grow up taking vacations – I went to horse shows instead.

So now that I’m adult and I can’t afford to show horses anymore – I simply don’t go anywhere. Is that weird? The hubs and I don’t budget for, plan, etc for any time away. The last time we went anywhere was in 2007 for our honeymoon!

So I’ve been reading Meghann’s blog and now I’m smitten. I want to rent a house, on a beach. I want to be able to cook my own meals (normally when we try to go away, the sheer influx of restaurant food makes me sick by day 2). I want to be able to take my puppy with me and not worry about having to board her or find someone to watch her.

Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, and even South Carolina would all be feasible driving options for us from Pennsylvania. Any advice? Does anyone ever vacation in those areas? I’m wondering if I can find a small/affordable enough place if we could pull off a long weekend or something in September.


Citrucel on the way to work – 7:45 a.m.

Breakfast – 9:15 a.m.

Well, I got to work and immediately got thrown into manual labor. I had to move a bunch of computer/printer equipment and help load it into a vehicle.

It was certainly a wake-up call!

Once I got back to my desk, I dove into my janetha-inspired breakfast… protein oats with pb & j


1/3 cup oats (cooked in water with a pinch of salt)

1 scoop vanilla EAS whey protein powder

1 tbsp natural peanut butter

1 tbsp apricot preserves (It was in the fridge and open…and the strawberry wasn’t yet…so I went with it)


No wonder this is popular! Holy crap am I full! LOL


The EAS vanilla powder tastes a thousand times better in this than it does in my smoothies…but it’s still so gritty.


I made the oats and mixed in the protein powder last night, so when I got to work today I discovered I needed A LOT more water added to re-heat it, so it didn’t turn into a congealed mess. But it all worked out in the end. And 1/3 cup is the perfect amount of oats…seriously.

Love it!

No snack, since it took me until 10am to finish my breakfast and I was super-full

Lunch – 12:30 p.m.

When I was packing my food last night I had an overpowering hankering for a taco salad so I nixed packing my lunch and treated myself to a taco salad from market:


Romaine hearts, cucumber, grilled chicken, black beans, sprinkle of cheese, fresh-made salsa/pica de gallo (I seriously don’t know the difference?), guacamole. Mmmm…

And the keep-Kelly-from-getting-super-stressed handful of dark chocolate M&Ms.


Snack 3:45 p.m.

½ a clif bar – honestly wasn’t hungry.




Pilates Corkscrew 3×10

Pilates Back Extensions 3×10

Captain’s Chair Leg Raises 3×12

Side Bends with Dumbbell (12.5 lbs) 3×12

20 minutes HIIT on the elliptical

50 minutes @ the gym = 320 calories burned


Dave walked Holly again for me tonight so I could make dinner.


I stopped at a local pizzeria on my way home and picked up a fresh dough ball from them, to make this deep dish cheeseburger pizza. The recipe called for topping the cooked product with arugula, tomato, onion, and olive oil, but I wanted a real salad with my pizza, so I skipped that and made us side salads (red leaf lettuce, spinach, red onion, cucumber, tomato, snap peas, carrots, orange pepper)


It was good! I’d prefer to use my dough, but in a pinch the pizzeria helped me out immensely 🙂

Holy mother of Mondays! It’s only 11:43 a.m. as I type this, and today has certainly been “a case of the Mondays” here at work!

I kind of fell off the face of the planet last week. Here’s how it went down:


  • Did my full body weights workout and 15 minutes of warm-up cardio on the elliptical – the gym was still insanely hot. I find it incredibly hard to make strength gains when it’s that hot. 1h10m=507 calories burned


  • Dave had to have a procedure in the morning, so I was his driver. They were giving him anesthesia, so he needed a ‘keeper’ LOL
  • Procedure went well, but I took the rest of the day off any way to spend with him. I feel bad – I wasn’t very good about being there for him at the office. See, I hate medical areas….the smell, the weird sterile-but-full-of-germs feel….it makes me feel like I’m going to pass out. So I wasn’t exactly able to sit with him as long as I should’ve been. 😦
  • Made it to the gym mid-afternoon for a 20 minute HIIT session on the elliptical, and abs (Ball Pass-over, Twisting Crunches, Planks). 50m=403 calories burned
  • Ended up eating both breakfast (eggs, toast, home fries for me) AND dinner (grilled chicken with bbq sauce, sweet potato, salad) out (at Dave’s request), so by evening my tums was unhappy…I vastly prefer to eat my own food at home! I spent the rest of the evening on the couch watching Golden Girls and Cheers re-runs and doing laundry.


  • The usual – cleaning, errands, shopping for a dress for a wedding.
  • The hubs went fishing in the evening with a friend, and I somehow ended up cleaning out and rearranging all of our food cupboards, the upstairs freezer, and all of my clothes. Don’t ask me where THAT came from. LOL
  • Fed myself – whole wheat pasta with organic sauce and some fresh parm. Divine.


  • Weeded and sorted out my garden (I had a few plants to thin out and move around)
  • Shopped for a dress for the wedding again – and was successful this time. I am by no means petite, but I bought a petite dress and it fit perfectly. In a smaller size than I normally wear. In the clearance section. Fate, anyone?
  • Hubs wanted ice cream, so we went out for ice cream in the evening. I ordered a small cone – and it was the size of my head. Apparently I need to order the child size next time.
  • Had leftover spicy honey chicken and green beans for dinner


This morning has just been…chaotic. That’s the best word. I just finished telling Dave yesterday that Mondays tend to be easy at my job, and mid-week tends to be a mess. Apparently I’m paying the price for saying that.

Breakfast – 9:45 a.m.

A quickly devoured bowl of Puffins and Red Berry with fresh strawberries (local strawberries are almost done 😦 My farmer’s market guy tells me one more week!) and milk (consumed after an entirely-too-long staff meeting which lasted until 9:45 a.m.)

I emailed the hubs before lunch and told him Monday was basically handing me my own butt, and he wrote back with:

“Hang in there, love. Monday is almost half dead, and there’s a great workout and a happy puppy waiting for you on the other side”


Lunch – 12:15 p.m.

I had the ingredients to make one last traded-up greek salad, so that was today’s lunch

I didn’t eat it all…I think the stress of the day affected my appetite. I ate ¾ of what I packed.


Strong hankering for the new M&M’s with pretzels in them after lunch though. Holy crap. Alas, none were to be found within the vicinity of my workplace.

But Dark Chocolate M&M’s were:


Snack 3:45 p.m.

½ a Clif Crunchy Peanut Butter bar…I wasn’t feeling that great (headache from computer work all day!) and it was quick.

Exercise 4:50 p.m.

15 minutes on the treadmill walking hills as warm up

Gentle stretching to work out the kinks from sitting in a desk chair all day 🙂 I normally do:

  • Lay on the floor with feet flat on the ground, concentrating on relaxing the lower back and letting it come to rest on the mat
  • Stretch legs out completely and lay in corpse pose until lower back is released and relaxed
  • Curl knees up to chest and do some gentle knee-to-chest-and-release spinal rolls
  • Do spinal rolls from side to side
  • Do ‘rolling like a ball’ from Pilates…tuck legs in and wrap hands under your knee joints and roll yourself up onto your butt bones, then back down
  • Lay flat on back and stretch legs straight up to the ceiling and hold them there for a bit
  • Roll over and do some cat/cow poses, ending in child’s pose for a moment
  • Stand up and do 2-3 sun salutations to work through some movement

That’s just standard “I sat at a desk all day” stuff I do. I normally incorporate for my hips as well, but I’ve REALLY slacked on my hip stuff lately. How can I tell? When I breathe, they pop. Seriously.

Today was the Oxygen full body workout again — thank GOD the gym wasn’t hot today – and I made some strength gains. I’ll be sore tomorrow. LOL I’m already thinking Wednesday might be a high reps/low weight day for recovery.

I swear I’ll get that Google document up here! LOL

Headed home to water the garden and walk the happy puppy 🙂

Had a great quote today at the gym, with a weight lifting friend…

“There’s no crying in weightlifting…some sobbing, maybe…but no crying!!”

Dinner 7:30 p.m.

Monday is Dave’s steak night! Woot!

Filet mignon on the grill, steamed broccoli, and some pasta sprayed with margarine and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. Hit the spot.

Dessert 9:00 p.m.

I pulled 4 cookies worth of dough out of my frozen chocolate chip cookie dough stash, baked them up, cooled them, and slathered some slow-churned Edy’s vanilla bean between them. One for me, one for Dave.

Happy Hump Day kids! I ended up going to bed too late last night, so I am dragging today. Oy. It’s days like this, I understand why people drink coffee.

Citrucel on the way to work – 7:45 a.m.

Breakfast – 8:45 a.m.

I made a smoothie today since I knew I had a lot going on at work this morning….I left the spinach out so I could take it to meetings and not get stared at. LOL

Strawberry/Orange/Banana Smoothie

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 4 orange slices
  • 10 fresh strawberries
  • 5 ice cubes
  • Splash of milk
  • ¼ cup oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Blended to deliciousness. I only got to eat half before I left for my meeting, but I was full so I left the remainder in the freezer.

Snack – 10:45 a.m.

I wanted a granola bar, hardcore. Yum. Kashi Honey Almond Flax was consumed.

Lunch – 12:15 p.m.

So, I’m pretty proud of my lunch. I took some inspiration from Tina, and her NuVal Trading Up philosophy, and re-created a salad I’d had at our Farmer’s Market.

The original Greek Salad was:

  • iceberg/romaine lettuce
  • tomatoes
  • cucumber
  • oregano
  • rice pilaf (made with white rice and tomato juice)
  • feta cheese
  • oil and vinegar dressing (red wine vinegar and vegetable oil)

Problem with it was it had such a lack of protein, it really didn’t stay with me. I kept saying “I wish I could get a chicken breast on it” – so I made my own!

Here’s my “traded up” version:

  • romaine and spinach
  • organic tomatoes
  • organic cucumber
  • oregano
  • rice pilaf (made with brown rice and low sodium tomato juice…quinoa would be fabulous)
  • reduced fat feta cheese
  • oil and vinegar dressing (made with red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil)
  • grilled chicken breast



(Okay, so it travelled to work in my lunch bag and basically got ‘tossed’ in the process. Still!)

I actually had two containers of this salad…it wouldn’t fit in my container once I mixed it. LOL


Snack – 3:30 p.m.

Another granola bar! LOL Kashi dark chocolate coconut this time, while on the run.


So…as I went to leave work I discovered my car was acting weird. Drove the two blocks to the gym, got out – yep, flat tire. There’s a screw jammed in it. UGH.

Called Dave and told him he needed to change my tire at the gym, but it put me in a bad mood and my workout sucked as a result…

Exercise – 4:45 p.m.

Was supposed to do HIIT today, but I was grouchy, hot, tired, and mad about my car, so I did 30 minutes on the elliptical, moderate pace.

Abs work:

Decline Bench Crunches 3×12

Russian Twists with 8 lb. Medicine ball 3×12

Planks 3×60 seconds

Side Planks 3 (each side)x30 seconds  — I’m bad at these!!

55m @ the gym (hotter than Hades, too. I complained today.) = 360 calories burned

Dave changed my tire (I’m completely capable, but when they air-gun the lugnuts on I can’t get them off!) and now I’m cruising around on my spare. Gonna drop off my tire in the a.m. and hopefully they can repair it. I just bought those tires in September!

Drank the remainder of my breakfast smoothie on my way home from the gym…I froze it solid at work, and since today was a short work-out, it was the perfect temp for drinking by the time I headed back to the car. I left it in my insulated lunch box while I was in the gym, though, because it was deathly hot here today, and my smoothie had milk in it. 🙂

Watered the garden and walked the doggle when I got home.

Dinner – 7:30 p.m.

Baked salmon with lemon, Annie’s mac and cheese, and steamed cauliflower. Dave isn’t allowed to have husks/shells/hulls/etc for a medical procedure, so I had to replace the rice in this meal with mac and cheese.

I’m certainly not complaining!


Hoping to sit down a little earlier tonight…last night it was 10pm! Too late!!

I’m posting this at 10pm, so I’ve already failed. LOL

I really need to work a 6-hour work day. That would be perfect. 🙂 I’d even be willing to negotiate to 7!
