Archive for March, 2010

It’s a rainy, dreary day here! All day I wished I could crawl back in bed and watch movies and snuggle with the husband and the pup.

But alas, it wasn’t meant to be!

I had a busy day at work, but was also battling a headache. Sometimes when strong weather systems go through and the barometric pressure gets crazy, my head aches. It feels like somebody has it in a vice!

The good news is I’m still on schedule with completing tasks this week before we head to Pittsburgh to see my family on Thursday evening. Hurray for planning! LOL

Breakfast

Red berry, blueberries, and half of a way-past-its-prime banana (it was kinda mushy-gross) with milk

IMAG0190

Snack

Strawberry fruit leather. I found these at Target, and they were way cheaper than the buy-individually fruit leathers in the organic section of our supermarket. Delish! I love the texture 🙂

IMAG0195

Lunch

I packed a few pretzels and some carrot sticks and tomatoes, but we were lacking any kind of protein and whole grain that looked good at home, so I got a ham/provolone/lettuce/tomato/pickle on whole wheat sammie at the farmer’s market. Was disappointed to find she put mayo on it (ew) so I ate it open-faced sans the bread with mayo.

IMAG0191

I like mayo just fine, but hate it on my ham/turkey sandwiches. Gross!

IMAG0192

I had a meeting at lunchtime, so I actually ate half the sandwich, went to my meeting, then came back and had the rest of the sandwich + the pretzels + the carrot sticks/tomatoes afterward

Snack

Honey Almond Flax Kashi Bar with PB (although I wish I had some almond butter right now…would’ve been perfect on it!)

IMAG0193

I’m finding that higher protein snacks fuel me through my cardio+weight days better. Carbs give out on me halfway through.

IMAG0194

Exercise

20 minutes HIIT on the elliptical

10 minutes of steady state on elliptical

Stretches (lower back/hamstrings/piriformis)

Upper Body Strength:

I stole my upper body workout in its entirety from Susan today. Like, so much I’m copying and pasting it from her site and adding my weights.

I love Susan and her workouts, and am happy and thankful she takes the time to chart them out for people like me to steal during weeks I’m too lazy/tired/stressed/busy/bored to create my own 🙂

Tried to walk Holly but it was just too windy/cold/wet, so we did one lap of the park (1/3 of a mile) and called it quits!

Dinner

Salmon (with fresh lemon, salt, pepper, and a small pat of real butter), wild rice, and steamed broccoli.

IMAG0196

I freaking love this meal. 🙂

Evening

Gotta pack up some toiletries, thaw some turkey meatballs for tomorrow, and maybe sew the couch. I hate to sew, and am bad at it. I ran out of time to do it properly last night. Really I think I’d rather go read my book. Ha! 🙂

1. What television character do you identify with?
I can’t even think of one. Although, I don’t watch much TV, and, last I checked there weren’t many TV shows about working 8-4:30, going to the gym, walking the dog, making dinner, and getting ready to do it all over again – which is my life. haha

2. Describe your morning routine.
I wake up, throw on pajama pants, and take Holly outside to do her business. Come back in, open up all the blinds, turn on the fish tank lights, clean up the living room (read: hide all things from puppy). Pack my breakfast/lunch(I prep it the night before and just toss it in my lunchbag in the a.m.), feed the dog, get a shower and brush teeth. Check email, blowdry hair, let pup out to frolic with the neighbor dog while I pour a travel mug of Citrucel for the trip into work. Load my work bag, gym bag, purse, lunchbox, and travel mug into the car, collect the pup back into the house, kiss a still-sleeping DH, and head to work.

3. How do you do lunch? Bring from home or dine out? Same thing every day or mix it up?
I bring from home most of the time, but Tues/Thurs the farmer’s market is open and I can be easily tempted by that. Friday my office normally orders out as a group.

4. What is one moment that, although seemingly trivial at the time, changed your life?
Going bowling with my girlfriends in college. That’s when I met the husband!

5. Name your top three beauty products.
I’m not much of a beauty product person.

Lip gloss

Aveda hairbrush (best brush EVER)

Aveeno face lotion with spf 30

6. What do you do when you’re alone in the car?
I sing, or talk to myself. Seriously.

7. What is the ideal city for you to live in? If you can, take this survey (< that’s a link) and tell us the results. Do you agree with them?
I took the quiz and here are my top 5 cities:
1. Hendersonville, NC – never heard of it. Seems nice.

2.Easton, PA – I live about an hour/hour and a half from it. It’s a dive with expensive housing outside of Philly. No thanks.

3. Bremerton, WA – never heard of it

4. Johnstown, PA – I’m from near here, originally. It’s also a dive, with no work/economy.

5. Lewiston, ME – never heard of it.

I don’t agree with some of them, but others make me curious.

8. Are you waiting for something?
I have a meeting at 1pm today and I’ll be happier when it’s over.

9. What was the last shocking news you heard?
They passed that healthcare bill. Ugh.

10. What are three things you wouldn’t do for a million dollars?
I wouldn’t kill anyone, I wouldn’t hurt my family/friends, and I wouldn’t give up a limb/organ.

Hello all! This weekend was busy, and full of bad food. Seriously delicious food, but not so much on the healthy side. And I didn’t get much exercise beyond walking the pup.

Friday:

Breakfast – Banana oatmeal and egg beaters

Lunch – Chicken/provolone hot sandwich with a greek salad (take-out)

Dinner – oil/vinegar marinated grilled chicken, mashed potatoes with green onions and bacon mixed in, steamed green beans

Exercise – walked the pup for 30 minutes, but didn’t have time to do anything else because the in-laws came over for dinner

Evening – laundry, and spending time with my feeling-neglected DH.

Saturday:

Tons of errands, cleaned the whole house, and tons of kuldunai making for my father in law’s birthday dinner.

Breakfast: red berry with banana, milk

Lunch: slice of pepperoni pizza and leftover mashed potatoes from last night (how’s that for junk food)

Snack: slice of venison bologna

Dinner: kuldunai, leftover green beans

Evening – had my inlaws around…MIL made a carrot cake and insisted I eat it. Bleck.

Sunday:

Ran errands with the hubs – I know more about turkey hunting equipment than I ever wanted. Attended a birthday party in the evening, which meant a super-later dinner and getting to bed late.

Breakfast: egg beaters, one slice leftover bacon, used leftover roasted potatoes as ‘home fries’

Lunch: cheddar turkey braut on a potato roll, handful of pretzels

Dinner: a very late and very rushed Chinese – I had 2 crab rangoons and a pint of chicken and broccoli with white rice. And there was a slice of chocolate cake at the birthday party.

Ugh. I basically feel like I dont want to eat for days after all of that.

And yet, here are some eats from Monday! Ha!

Breakfast

Re-do (in packaged and portable form) of yesterday. OMG it was delicious. Added a bagel thin with strawberry preserves for staying power.

IMAG0184

Nom.

Snack

Didn’t make it to snack because breakfast was filling

Lunch

Leftover spinach/sausage stuffed shells and a side salad with red wine vinegar

IMAG0187

IMAG0188

Snack

Kashi bar with peanut butter and a cup of seedless grapes

(Unpictured because I forgot!)

Exercise

Going to be a short exercise week this week…

Monday: Lower body strength, abs, and cardio

Tuesday: Upper body strength, cardio

Wednesday: One of the infamous at-home boot camps, and yoga after my hair appointment

Thursday: in the car all evening

Friday: visiting family

Tonight was….

30 minutes of cardio

Stretches

Abs(I did these as three circuits, resting after each circuit):

Planks 3×40

Side Planks 3×30 on each side

Side Crunches (Keeping feet on floor, crunch up slightly, then reach side to side to grasp your ankles firmly) 3×12 on each side

Bird Dogs 3×20 second holds on each side

Reverse Crunches on Flat Bench 3×12

Decline Bench Crunch with Twist 3×12

Lower body:

Clockwork Lunges 3×12 (each side)

Step-Ups 3×12 (each side)

Leg Press – Double 3×12

Leg Press – Single 3×12

Calf Press – Single 3×12

Wall Squats with Ball

Leg Lifts (to each side and backwards) 3×12

Ball Bridges 3×12

Came home and ate a fruit leather and a small piece of deer bologna before walking the pup for 25 minutes. My legs are officially jello.

Dinner

Venison steak (grilled) with steamed cauliflower and pasta tossed in olive oil

(Unpictured…sorry!)

Evening

My week is going to be busy…we’re headed out to the Pittsburgh area to see my family for Easter and I always feel like there’s a ton to be done before we leave.

See my list?

IMAG0186

Tonight I need to:

  • Sew the couch cushion the dog chewed
  • Pack up the pup’s stuff for the trip

In addition to my normal weeknight activities (reading blogs, sending emails, updating my blog, packing breakfast/lunch/snacks for work tomorrow, getting clothing for work and gym tomorrow, and cleaning up from dinner)

G’night all!

Hello all! I’m a bit frustrated today, for a couple of reasons.

Oddly enough, though, I’m in a good mood, aside from the frustration! LOL
Frustrations

My husband has invited his parents over for dinner tonight, because they wanted to attend a ridiculously expensive fish fry, and we didn’t want to spend the money on it, so husband suggested having them over instead. This means no gym tonight (because normal people eat at 6:30, whereas we normally eat at 7:45-8:00 to fit the gym in). This makes me frustrated, as I am feeling better from my cold. It also screws up my plan to do my weekly Walmart trip tonight, thus eliminating a double trip (Farmer’s Market and Walmart) tomorrow morning. Plus, Wally World is always dead on Friday night. I love it. screws up my plan to do my weekly Walmart trip tonight, thus eliminating a double trip (Farmer’s Market and Walmart) tomorrow morning. Plus, wally world is always dead on friday night. I love it.

Having my inlaws over for dinner on Saturday for my father in law’s birthday involves dave and i making four batches of kuldunai (FIL always wants kuldunai for his birthday). It takes a lot of 4 people! So Saturday will be filled to the brim with errands, cleaning the house, and making kuldunai, leaving no time for gym makeup sessions.

My hubs is bummed/moody and says he feels like we havent spent any time together lately. So:
Me: Well, lets do something this weekend.
Him: We can’t, we have my parents both friday and saturday.
Me: Well, we have sunday.
Him: But the weather is supposed tobe bad
Me: What if we went to a movie?
Him: Its too expensive. *sulk*

Thoughts? He’s hard to deal with. He doesnt like weekend getaways, doesnt seem to want to offer any advice on what he’d like to go do. All he keeps talking about is a week on an island in the carribean, but we need windows for the house andcant afford that kind of luxury.

Any suggestions? Im normally content with a rental movie and his presence, but he obviously needs more than that.

Alright..thats all the heavy stuff.:)
Be back later with food…i just wanted to test out posting from my phone. 🙂

I’m so glad it’s almost-Friday (Thursday). This seems like the longest week ever!

Breakfast

Red Berry rides again! Although apparently I was so excited I forgot to photograph it. Just red berry cereal, milk, and a perfectly ripe banana.

Lunch

I wanted a greek salad from the farmer’s market, but it has zero protein, so I went half and half: I bought a greek salad, boxed up half for tomorrow, and ate half today with my leftover garlic lemon chicken with orzo and broccoli.

IMAG0181

IMAG0180

Perfect solution

Snack

A brownie. With icing. From a can.

(Ugh. Why did I eat that? I can feel the sugar slump coming.)

And ½ a honey almond flax granola bar

I really wasn’t hungry at all for snack.

Exercise

10 minutes of moderate cardio as a warm up

I did a full body workout again, but I did one focused on testing the balance of my left and right sides. I am left handed/left sided, and when I started working out I focused a lot on my right side, because it was naturally weaker. But at some point I realized my right side was the stronger one – and I’d been neglecting my left side!

These moves are all single-sided to test/correct that.

I did 2 sets of 12 of each, at a slightly lower weight than I knew I could do (as I’m still sniffly and working on this cold)

  • Single Leg Calf Raise (on a step)
  • One-Arm Preacher Curl
  • Single Arm Reverse Cable Pressdown
  • Single Arm Lat Pulldown (standing/straddling the lat pulldown seat)
  • One Arm Seated Cable Row
  • Alternating Arms Chest Press on Flat Bench (dumbbells)
  • Alternating Overhead Shoulder Press
  • Single Leg Squat
  • One Legged Leg Press
  • One Legged Deadlift

I also fit in some ab work in between exercises:

  • Crunch with alternating toe taps
  • Crunch with twist (legs at 90 degrees)
  • Reverse Crunch
  • Leg Lifts
  • Seated Crunch Leg Pull-In
  • Alternating Toe Touches
  • Balancing Twists with Medicine Ball
  • Supermans
  • Bird Dogs
  • High to Low Planks

HRM reports 563 calories burned in 1h20m

Went home with every intention of walking the pup, but, the neighbor dog was out and they ran laps around both yards for half an hour. Better exercise for her anyway. LOL

Dinner

Leftover stuffed shells (yum) and salad

IMAG0182

Evening

Doing some prep work – my in laws are over for dinner both Friday and Saturday, so I needed to get some things ready for Friday.

Weekend

Friday: in laws over for dinner…won’t have time to gym after work, or do errands. Boo.

Saturday: errands, and making kuldunai for Saturday night’s dinner with the in-laws. Again.

Sunday: dropping in on a friend for his “open house” for his 30th birthday 🙂

It’s 1:45, and I’m sitting at my desk bawling because I read Ryan’s blog about Harvey.

GAH! I am such a pansy. I cry at everything.

I grew up on a farm, but losing animals never gets easier! 😦

I felt pretty awesome yesterday – like I was kicking my cold – but today I’m not feeling so awesome.

I’m going to go to the gym for cardio, but I’m going to nix my original plan for HIIT and just do some steady state on a touch-and-go basis. The goal is to not tucker myself out tonight.

I need to get healthy.

Here’s a recap of today so far, as well as this evening’s info. If I can, I like to take a few minutes of my break at work and start my blog posts.

Breakfast

My combo on Monday was so delicious, I re-created it. Egg beaters and banana/walnut/cinnamon oatmeal

IMAG0172

Snack

None. I actually didn’t even finish my oatmeal, as I was feeling rotten-y

Lunch

Tuna (with a smidge of plain greek yogurt, onion, salt and pepper) on a lavash with spring mix, yellow peppers, and carrot sticks. Had a couple that didn’t fit in the wrap on the side, as well as a huge faux-clementine. I’m almost done with the bag. Thank god – I miss real clementines.

IMAG0173

Snack

There was an un-pictured 6 jelly beans right after lunch. I’ll be happy when Easter is over, as I can’t say no to their fruity, sugary deliciousness.

A fruit leather at 2:30, just because.

IMAG0175

I bought Honey Almond Flax flavored kashi bars to try, so I had one of those…verdict? Tasty!

IMAG0176

And the last of my regular yogurt.

IMAG0178

Exercise

Headed to the gym, intent on getting some cardio in, without exhausting myself so I can hopefully get over this cold!

Did 30 minutes of steady state (moderate pace) on the elliptical on a hills program.

Hopped off and spent some time stretching my piriformis, hamstrings, and ended it all with 4 slow and easy Sun Salutations.

HRM says 350 calories burned.

Came home and walked Holly for 30 minutes. 🙂

Dinner

Spicy honey chicken with foil packet potatoes and missing green beans, because I totally started eating them before I realized I didn’t take a picture. Oops?

03.23.10 – Snarky

Warning

I’m feeling a bit snarky today (I guess that means I’m feeling better? Haha)

Confessions

  • I’m jealous of people who work from home/don’t work/go to school/whatever. Your meals are always so delicious and calmly prepared-looking, while all of mine are shown in Tupperware containers, on a faux laminated wood desk, under bad fluorescent lighting. We don’t even have a kitchenette where I could keep plates and pretend to eat like a real person. I wash my dishes – wait for it – in the bathroom.(Thus bringing all my dishes home if I can!) Maybe I should at least buy attractive Tupperware. Ha!
  • I’m jealous of people who work from home/don’t work/go to school/whatever, because they talk about how invigorating it is to go out in the a.m. and walk the dog, run, etc. I know some people who work do this, but I can’t imagine fitting it in while it’s light out and still getting to work on time.
  • I’m angry that my YMCA – that I love in all other aspects – offers all their cool classes in the middle of the frickin’ day. Not early, not evening. 10am – 3pm, to be exact, is when all the fun stuff is. What the hell? Who does those classes?! I guess the people I’m jealous of in the first two bullets. Cuz the rest of us in the working world who only get 30 minutes for lunch certainly can’t participate.
  • When I don’t feel good, all I want is junk. Why is that? I saw a huge coconut and chocolate easter egg at the store (I’m talking huge…maybe 2 pounds?) and actually contemplated buying it and eating before I even got out of the parking lot. I abstained.
  • I’m jealous of people who don’t have issues eating. I mean eating in general. I have so many “tummy troubles” it isn’t even funny. I’ve come a long way through trial and error, but it’s still an agonizing decision to eat out, eat someone else’s cooking, etc. I never know what I’ll get. It makes things that should be fun – like vacations, dinner out with friends, etc – a hassle.
  • I feel like I miss out on a lot because of the agoraphobia issues. Fitbloggin was in Baltimore last weekend – a mere 45 minute drive from my house – and I didn’t attend, because even that small-distance travelling is terrifying. Especially when I do it alone. So frustrating. Here again, I’ve made a lot of strides, and can do most things, but traveling, especially alone, continues to be a huge challenge.

The good news? I’m feeling better today. Still a little stuffy on the right side of my face, but feeling 10x better nonetheless.

I think I’m going to lift today, but maybe kick the weight down a bit so I don’t push too hard too fast.

Breakfast

Leftover 10-grain blueberry pancakes from Friday. With maple syrup.

IMAG0167

Nom.

Snack

None, I ate three pancakes!

Lunch

I packed tuna and a lavash wrap to assemble at work, but I had a meeting from 11:30 – 1:30 with my boss, and when she suggested the farmer’s market on the way back, I couldn’t say no.

I ended up with a potato burrito: potatoes, black beans, salsa, guacamole, rice and a little sour cream.

IMAG0168

Amazing and delicious.

Snack

A whole wheat mini bagel with peanut butter and strawberry jam. Deeeelicious! I packed fruit as well, but my lunch was so late I didn’t need it.

IMAG0169

Exercise

I forged ahead with lifting today.

10 minutes warmup on the elliptical, then:

2 sets of 10, at a moderate weight (I didn’t want to lift heavy and tucker myself out after my sickness)

  • Seated Leg Press
  • Single Leg Seated Leg Press
  • Leg Extension
  • Hamstring Curl
  • Chest Press
  • Bicep Curl to Military Press
  • Bent Over Row to Tricep Kickback
  • Assisted Pullup (using Smith Machine)

In between each exercise, I added some abs to “make up” for not getting some in yesterday. I know it isn’t a perfect situation, but this week is pressed for gym time as it is.

I did:

  • High Planks with Forearm Touch 2×10
  • Crunch with Alternating Leg Extensions 2×10 each side
  • Lower Back Extensions 2×10
  • Lying Side Oblique Crunches 2×10 each side
  • Scissor Kicks 2×20 each side
  • Seated Crunch Leg Pull-In 2×10

HRM says 515 calories burned in 1h15m.

Dinner

Spinach/sausage stuffed shells and salad. I’m always trying different stuffed shell recipes. I can’t find one that’s just right. My “second mommy” (my best friend’s mom from home) makes the absolute best ones, and she never uses a recipe, so it’s impossible to duplicate!

IMG_1612

Evening

IMAG0171

See that? That’s my ratty old couch, WITH A HOLE IN IT.

Holly took it upon herself to destroy the cushion on the end today.

I need windows.

I can’t buy furniture.

My dog hates being crated, and doesn’t generally destroy things. And yet, here we are.

Crap.

And she’s cute. (Yes, she’s using a stuffed squirrel as a pillow.)

IMAG0170

Crappity crap crap.
